Becoming better at  Self control exercises and Self regulation exercises can help you to become aware and manage negative emotions as they arise, and these exercises have been proven to help people manage stress better. 

One specific area of the brain which controls self control and self regulation is known as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). 

Long term work stress is associated with a reduced size in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC).  Damage to this area of the brain can leave people vulnerable to depression.
